I haven’t posted much about Grab the Loot and Run (GTLAR) but progress is still being made. I was originally planning for it to be a very casual roguelike with simple mechanics, but after getting a prototype up and running it became pretty clear that a roguelike with very simple mechanics translated to boring gameplay. I probably spent about a month just brainstorming ways that this could be overcome, what elements could be added to make it more fun. This really got me thinking about what elements of roguelikes are fun in general. It’s not a trivial question to answer because it probably differs from player to player, but for myself I identified several things. I’m trying to base my game around those things and seeing if I can make it as simple as possible, but it seems that it will inevitably be more complex then I would have preferred, Oh well. Here are a couple screenshots after I put in some water and grass generation.
